Noise from the upstairs neighbours: what actually works

Footsteps, scraping chairs, a washing machine through the slab — contact noise is the hardest noise to fight. Why the ceiling is the right surface to treat, and how an acoustic mass-spring-mass ceiling brings real, measurable relief.

Two kinds of noise, two problems

Airborne noise — voices, music, a television — travels through the air and is blocked reasonably well by mass alone. Contact noise is different: footsteps, moving furniture and appliances vibrate the building itself, and the structure carries that vibration straight into your rooms. That is why you hear heels on the floor above so much louder than a conversation.

Contact noise is best tackled at the source — a soft floor covering upstairs works wonders — but you cannot oblige your neighbours to renovate. What you control is your own side of the slab.

Why the ceiling comes first

In an apartment, the ceiling is the largest surface radiating the neighbours’ noise into your space. Treating it first gives the biggest gain; in older buildings with continuous masonry, flanking walls can be a second step.

What does not work: gluing thin foam or "acoustic" panels directly to the slab. Direct contact passes the vibration straight through — decoration, not isolation.

Mass-spring-mass: the principle that works

Real contact-noise isolation decouples a new, heavy layer from the structure: mass (the slab), spring (an air cavity with absorption and resilient mounting), mass (the new ceiling). The vibration loses its energy in the spring instead of reaching the surface you hear.

Our acoustic ceiling build-up applies exactly that principle in about 5 cm of construction depth, with a rated insulation improvement around 55 dB for the system — enough to turn stamping into a faint background and normal living noise into silence. A deeper cavity or added mass pushes the performance further.

Invisible when finished

The acoustic layer disappears behind a tensioned STRETCH membrane, so the finished result looks like any seamless designer ceiling — matte, satin or printed, with integrated lighting if you wish. No visible panels, no studio look in your living room.

Installation is a matter of days, not weeks, and the room stays usable: no wet plaster, minimal dust.

A realistic expectation

No ceiling system makes a badly built slab disappear completely, and very low-frequency thuds are physics’ hardest case. But a properly executed mass-spring-mass ceiling is the difference between hearing every step and genuinely forgetting you have neighbours most of the day.
